The Lavoisier Island is a 28-km long and up to 8 km wide island west of Graham Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It belongs to the Biscoe Islands and is located between Rabot Island and Watkins Island . It is separated from the Loubet and Graham coasts by the Crystal Sound , and from the Renaud Island to the north by Pendleton Strait .
It was first mapped during the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Charcot , who originally named it as Île Nansen after the Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen . However, confusion with the in Wilhelmina Bay lying Nansen Island to avoid the recommended UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960 was renamed after the French chemist Lavoisier (1743-1794).
