Lawndale is a US city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California . It has about 32,700 inhabitants (as of 2004). Lawndale is bordered by Redondo Beach to the west, Hawthorne to the north, Torrance to the southeast, and Alondra Park to the east. The urban area has a size of 5.1 km².

history

In 1905 the place was founded by Charles B. Hopper and named after a suburb of Chicago . The sale of land was initially slow, but in 1906 the first settlers came to the place. By 1910 the number of residents, most of whom were farmers, rose to 142.

The 20s were characterized by oil production. Driven by speculators and workers in the oil industry, land prices rose sharply, but also fell again after the production volumes began to decline from 1929 onwards. After World War II, immigrant and veteran housing demand rose again, and Lawndale became a residential area. Many of the residents were commuters who worked in other places. On December 28, 1959, residents voted in favor of the official establishment of a new city in Los Angeles County to avoid incorporation by any of the surrounding cities.

In the 1980s, many young people came to Lawndale who wanted to live near the beach but couldn't afford it, so they moved to less attractive inland towns. With the Urban Renewal Project , which ended in 2003, attempts were made to attract more residents and tourists by making improvements along Hawthorne Boulevard, the city's main thoroughfare.

In 2004 an electronic advertising sign was added. It creates an income of approximately $ 200,000 annually.
