Lazër Mjeda (born March 6, 1869 in Mjeda , Zadrima , Albania ; † July 8, 1935 ) was an Albanian clergyman and Archbishop of Shkodra from the Mjeda family .

Life

In 1875 he entered the Shkodra Pontifical Seminary . On August 10, 1891, he was ordained a priest in Shkodra by Archbishop Pasquale Guerini (1821-1911) . He served as pastor of Pllan ( Diocese of Pult ).

On March 28, 1900, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Sapa . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Guerini on 20 January 1901 in Shkoder.

On December 24, 1904, he was appointed titular archbishop pro hac vice of Areopolis and coadjutor bishop of Shkodra . Together with his brother, the writer D. Ndre Mjeda, he founded the linguistic and literary society "Agimi" (Eng. The Dawn ) in Shkodra . On April 14, 1909, Pope Pius X appointed him Archbishop of Skopje . On October 19, 1921, he was appointed Archbishop of Shkodra. On February 14, 1922, Mjeda arrived in Shkodra and, until his death in 1935, made a significant contribution to the restoration of orderly church conditions in Albania.

Without Mjeda's help, Ismail Qemali (1844-1919) would not have been able to proclaim Albania's independence from Vlora on November 28, 1912, because although he had a check to finance the trip, no bank would cash it for him. Archbishop Mjeda organized a charter ship to Vlora for Qemali with the help of the Austrian government. When Mjeda returned from London in February 1913, he had the certainty that political London and Vienna would secure Shkodra's membership in Albania.
