Lazareto ( Greek Λαζαρέτο ( n. Sg. ), Also Nisaki tou Sotira Νησάκι του Σωτήρα, "islet of the Redeemer") is only about 50 × 60 m large, today uninhabited island in the bay of Vathy , a southern tributary of the Molos Gulf , which divides the Greek island of Ithaca from its east coast into two parts. The small, tree-lined island is only around 100 m from the west bank of the bay and thus from Vathy, the main town and port of the island.

The chapel

On it is a chapel built in 1668, which is dedicated to the "Transfiguration of the Redeemer" (Μεταμόρφωση του Σωτήρα) and after which the island got its Greek name. The chapel was destroyed in the severe earthquake in August 1953 and then rebuilt in 1956. Every year on August 6th, the feast of the transfiguration of the Lord , a pilgrimage mass is celebrated there, to which the believers come by boat and during which an old icon of Christ is carried around.

history

Similar to Lazzaretto Vecchio in the Venice lagoon, the island served as a sick and quarantine station for people arriving from overseas in the early modern period. In 1817 the British erected a two-story building on the island, of which a bust of the then British High Commissioner for the Ionian Islands, Sir Thomas Matilands, has been preserved. The building initially served as a prison for exiles. Among those interned here was the Greek revolutionary Odysseas Androutsos . In 1912 the buildings were abandoned.

In the summer of 2003 a theatrical performance was produced on the islet.

In April 2008, the Greek Society for Tourism Development (Εταιρεία Τουριστικής Ανάπτυξης), which manages state property for tourism, left the property to the Ithaca municipality with the obligation to preserve and make the island useful for tourism.
