Lazarus Goldschmidt

Lazarus Goldschmidt , origin. Eliezer ben Gabriel (born December 17, 1871 in Plungiany , Lithuania , † April 18, 1950 in London ), was an important orientalist and scholar of Judaism .

Life

After Goldschmidt had graduated from the Jeschiwat Slobotka Talmud school in Kaunas , he went to Berlin in 1890 . There he studied oriental studies at the university ; mostly with Professors August Dillmann and Eberhard Schrader . Goldschmidt later switched to the University of Strasbourg with the same subjects . The main subjects of his studies were the Ethiopian language and literature.

After graduating, he settled in Berlin as a private scholar and worked intensively on the Semitic languages and their literature. His translations, which are still valid today, were created during this time. His translation of the Koran was published in Berlin in 1916 and the German version of the Babylonian Talmud, which is still relevant today, was published by Jüdischer Verlag Berlin in 1930–1936 . He published some of his work under the pseudonym Arselaj bar Bargelaj .

Goldschmidt was known for his valuable private library. When he emigrated , he sold them to the Royal Library in Copenhagen . There it can still be used today under the name Goldschmidt Collection . He emigrated to London in 1933, became a British citizen and died there on April 18, 1950 at the age of 78.

Immanuel Goldsmith was his son.
