action

After Thomas learns of the suicide of his absolutely hated brother Richard, he has to take care of his estate. So he travels from Paris to his homeland, to Marseille . But Richard's house, where Thomas also spent his childhood, has too many painful memories. After his father unexpectedly left the family, the mother led an impassive life and the relationship with his older brother Richard deteriorated. Thomas just wants to sell the house. However, he discovers a photo of Jeanne, so he stays in her hotel to complete the purchase.

Without revealing his identity, he becomes the only guest in the hotel for a while. There he learns that Jeanne, her godson Lucas, who is hard of hearing, and her uncle Joseph were very close friends with Richard, before he too unexpectedly left them. He hides Richard's suicide and listens to the conversation. He hopes to understand his brother better. Unfortunately, Lucas finds out about him by accident.

criticism

“A sensitive film about losses and unresolved pasts that weigh on the present and make a hopeful future almost impossible. The exquisitely played, cautiously staged film lives through omissions and empty spaces that symbolize and reinforce the inner emptiness of its protagonists. "

“Director Éric Caravaca brought the motif of substitution into play on many levels and sees the 'handwritten' reconstruction of missing things a characteristic of our time - the so-called surrogate family, which also determines various interpersonal relationships in the film, is one such phenomenon on the one hand can hide a deficiency and on the other hand actually help it to overcome it. The cinematic implementation is correspondingly reserved and subtle. The often very subjective, intense images allow a strong closeness to the protagonists and evoke a subliminal tension. "

- Arte.tv

“Despite melancholy images and bitter revelations, Éric Caravaca's drama never turns into a dreary 'art film', but rather touches with lifelike characters played with passion. Conclusion: bitter story, told with great feeling. "
