River course
The Leaf River rises at Gourd Lake in eastern Otter Tail County ("Otterschwanz" County) and then flows in an easterly direction through southern Wadena County , passing three lakes, namely Grass Lake, East Leaf Lake and West Leaf Lake before reaching the town of Bluffton. It then flows into the Crow Wing River from the east about 16 km northwest of the small town of Staples in the Thomastown Township.
Tributaries of the Leaf River are in turn the Wing River and the Redeye River , both of which flow into Wadena County.
history
The Leaf River served as the boundary for the 1847 Washington Treaty between the Pillager Chippewas and the United States and the 1855 Washington Treaty between the Mississippi Chippewas, the Pillager Chippewas and the United States. The land ceded here (east of the river) was sold to the Menomini, a Native American entity living in Wisconsin, but they refused to leave Wisconsin and sold the land back to the United States in 1854.
