Staples is located in central Minnesota, not far from the south bank of the Crow Wing River , a right tributary of the upper Mississippi . The geographical coordinates of Staples are 46 ° 21'20 "north latitude and 94 ° 47'32" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 12.12 km².

A railway line of the BNSF Railway runs parallel to US 10 , from which another line branches off to the south. The BNSF route is also used for passenger services by Amtrak , which has a station in Staples.
