history

Menahga was founded in 1891. It was named after the Ojibwe word for the Blueberry River. A year later, the place was incorporated as an independent municipality. The first white settlers had come to the region from the eastern United States in the 1870s, while the majority of later settlers came from Finland. In 1891 the city was connected to the route network of the Great Northern Railway . In the same year a post office was opened.
