history
The earliest settlers in Verndale were John E. Butler, Charles W. Brown, John B. Kelly, and Charles C. Kelly, who moved to what is now Verndale from Rock Falls , Iowa, in July 1877 . They began there with the construction of a housing estate on the pre-existing line of the Minnesota Northwestern Railroad . The settlement was named after Vernette Smith, a granddaughter of Lucas W. Smith, one of the city's first settlers and first postmaster. Shortly thereafter, over 100 families were living in the newly founded village, most of them relatives of veterans from the civil war .
The land around the city was still divided into plots in 1877, the following year a post office of the United States Postal Service was established . In January 1878 the first shop opened in the town. The settler WH Raymond opened a village shop in March 1878 , and in the same month a timber warehouse was opened in Verndale. In June 1878 the Crandall House was built, the first hotel in Verndale, which opened on July 3, 1878. Two more hotels were added in September 1878, and a school was opened in 1878, at which a total of 50 students were taught in 1880. Verndale showed relatively rapid growth after its foundation, in 1878 the place already had 300 inhabitants. By changing the entry in the land register , Verndale was enlarged to the north in 1879, previously only the part of today's Verndale located south of the railway line belonged to the place. In November 1879 an administrative meeting decided to build a grist mill , and on July 20, 1880, construction was completed.
From June 1880 a forge was opened in Verndale . A little later the place also had a pharmacy and an agricultural machinery business. In the early 1880s, construction began on a main thoroughfare through Verndale, connecting the town with Shell City . The resulting good transport connections from Verndale developed the place into an economic center, from which wheat was mainly traded. This continued to increase the population of Verndale. Two grain elevators were built to store the wheat in 1879 and 1882 . As early as 1880, Moses Stewart founded the Pettit Grain and Potato Company in the city , one of the largest companies in the region at the time. Over time, Verndale became the main trading place for wheat in Minnesota.
In 1884, some Verndale residents erected a building and offered it as a gift to the Wadena County Administration if it were to move its administrative headquarters from Wadena to Verndale. The building was a two-story construction in the Second Empire style with a mansard roof that was surrounded on all sides by streets. This offer was initially rejected by the district administration, but after protests there was a referendum in November 1886, in which Wadena was confirmed as the administrative seat with a margin of 484 votes. From 1892 a Catholic academy was housed in the now unused courthouse in Verndale , which was closed again after two years. The house was later used as a theater and to accommodate the local electricity supply.
In October 1898, nine commercial buildings in Verndale were destroyed by fire. On March 1, 1903, Verndale was connected to the public electricity network. Another major fire destroyed five buildings in the center of the village in 1906, and the Verndale courthouse was destroyed by fire on January 5, 1912. Only about half a year later, on July 8th, 1912, the Verndale gristmill burned down by a lightning strike , and neither was it rebuilt, nor was the courthouse. Verndale's original school building burned down in May 1915 and was replaced by a new building the following year. In 1954, 1965 and 1990 the school building was enlarged to accommodate more students.
