After the region belonged to an Indian reservation of the Winnebago from 1846 to 1855 , the Long Prairie Township was established in 1867. In the same year, today's city was built in its center, which was detached from the township in 1883 and incorporated as the Village of Long Prairie . The settlement was named after the Long Prairie River, which flows through the entire county from south to north.
