Sauk Center is a city in Stearns County in Minnesota , United States . At the 2000 census, the place had 3930 inhabitants. Sauk Center is the birthplace of the Nobel Prize winner for literature and novelist Sinclair Lewis , who was inspired by the city for the fictional location Gopher Prairie , the setting of his 1920 novel High Street . The local Sinclair Lewis Boyhood Home is a National Historic Landmark .

The place is located on Sauk Lake, the origin of the Sauk River , from which the name is derived. According to the United States Census Bureau , the place has an area of ​​10.3  km² , of which 9.6 km² is land and 0.6 km² (= 6.30%) is water.

Sauk Center is located approximately 100 miles northwest of the Minneapolis / Saint Paul metropolitan area on Interstate 94 , US Highway 71, and Minnesota State Route 28 .

The city is considered the geographic center of the state.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, the Sauk Center had 3930 inhabitants. The population density was 407.9 people per km ². There were 1709 housing units at an average of 177.4 per km ². The Sauk Centers population was 98.68% White , 0.31% Black or African American , 0.13% Native American , 0.25% Asian , 0.25% said they were racial , and 0.38% named two or more races. 0.53% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Sauk Center were distributed to 1616 households out of which 30.4% had children under 18 years of age. 53.0% of households were married, 8.5% had a female head of the household without a husband and 35.5% were not families. 31.4% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 17.8% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.01.

The population was divided into 25.6% minors, 8.2% 18–24 year olds, 25.1% 25–44 year olds, 18.6% 45–64 year olds and 22.5% old people of 65 years or more. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 women there were 89.4 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 85.4 men.

There are two schools in the city. Holy Family is a Catholic private school for students from kindergarten through sixth grade. The Sauk Center Public School is divided into Elementary, Junior High and Senior High School.
