She began singing at the age of two and completed her singing and dance training at a young age. At the age of five, she took part in a local talent show and then began performing in a musical theater. After appearing on television, Rimes made a number of appearances at Johnnie's High Country Music Revue in Arlington , which earned her the attention of nationwide talent scouts.

By the age of nine, Rimes was already an accomplished singer. She toured various states with her father and regularly sang the national anthem of the USA a cappella at the start of the Dallas Cowboys' NFL games . In order to give his now eleven-year-old daughter more attention, the father began to publish her recordings under the independent label Nor Vak Ja. Between 1992 and 1996 three albums were released there.

With Unchained Melody: The Early Years and You Light up My Life: Inspirational Songs , Rimes had two number one albums in the US charts in 1997.
