August Leberecht Wilke (also: Wilcken, Wilcke ; * May 17, 1737 in Wurzen ; † October 4, 1781 in Zeitz ) was a German philologist and Protestant theologian.

Life

August Wilhelm Leberecht Wilke was born in 1737 as the son of the Wurzner archdeacon Gottlob August Wilcke (1705–1762) and his wife Johanna Eleonora (née Eckhardt). He attended the electoral Saxon high school St. Afra in Meissen from April 14, 1749 . There he acquired his university entrance qualification under the rectors Theophilus Grabener and Johann Gottfried Höre . After he left the educational institution on March 20, 1755, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg on April 29, 1755 and in 1756 moved to the University of Leipzig . On October 17, 1757, when he returned to Wittenberg, he acquired the degree of master's degreeof philosophy, on March 23, 1758, he received permission to read aloud for universities as Magister legens and from then on worked there as a private lecturer .

Since he excelled in that activity, he was accepted on March 27, 1759 as an adjunct in the philosophical faculty. His penchant for theological sciences in particular led him from Greek philology to the Greek language. When he succeeded Georg Wilhelm Kirchmaier as professor of the Greek language in 1760 , he expanded the range of courses by taking even more into account classical authors and profane Greek literature. In 1772 he followed a call as pastor and superintendent in Herzberg (Elster) and in 1778 became castle preacher and monastery superintendent in Zeitz , which he remained until the end of his life.
