Lee Cheong-jun (also Yi Chŏng-jun; born August 9, 1939 in Changhŭng , Zenra-nandō sub - province, Chōsen province , former Japanese Empire , now South Korea ; † July 31, 2008 in Seoul , South Korea) was a South Korean author .

Life

Lee Cheong-jun graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in German .

In 1965 he published his first short novel Discharge from the Hospital ( 퇴원 ), with which he won the Sasanggye Prize for Young Authors . Many of his works were made into films, such as B. The island of Iŏ ( 이어도 ; 1977) by director Kim Ki-young , Sŏp'yŏnje ( 서편제 ; 1993) by Im Kwon-taek and Secret Sunshine ( 밀양 ; 2007) by Lee Chang-dong . Lee Cheong-jun died of lung cancer at the age of 68 . He wrote more than 100 short stories and 13 novels. Lee is considered one of the most influential authors in South Korea and has won several awards. His work has been translated into numerous languages ​​including English, German, French, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish.
