Lee Ho-cheol or Lee Ho-chol (born March 15, 1932 in Wŏnsan , Chōsen ; † September 18, 2016 ) was a South Korean writer .
Life
Lee Ho-chol was born into a farming family in the port city of Wŏnsan (now North Korea ). In July 1950, when he was a 12th grade student, he was recruited by the People's Army and taken prisoner of war in Kangwon Province . After his release and his later escape to the south, he earned his living as a dock worker or worker in a noodle factory until he was hired as a security guard for the US Army intelligence service .
During this time he began to write novels and short stories . With the publication of Heimatlos in 1955, he made his debut on the literary stage. In 1961 he received the literary prize for young authors for P'anmunjŏm and the 1962 Tongin literary prize for the story Heimatlos . His reputation as a writer did not mean, however, that he gained a foothold in the new society. His life was still that of an uprooted man who had to cope with his life alone and far away from his home, from parents and siblings. Lee's writings are also a documentation of his personal story. What he shows based on his own experiences is the tragedy of Korean history .
Until his death he was committed to founding an academy for Korean literature in Yanbian , i. H. in the autonomous area of the Korean minority in the People's Republic of China . He also campaigned for Korean reunification and visited North Korea several times on the occasion .
