Lee Katzman

Lee Katzman (born May 17, 1928 in Chicago , † August 1, 2013 ) was an American jazz trumpeter ( trumpet , flugelhorn ).

Katzman is said to have played in Chicago nightclubs when he was thirteen. From 1946 he worked in the swing bands of Bob Strong , Sam Donahue (with whom he recorded in 1947), Claude Thornhill , Gene Krupa , Jimmy Dorsey . From 1955 to 1958 he was with Stan Kenton , 1958 with Les Brown and 1959 with Terry Gibbs .

Katzman not only played swing but also bebop , with Dizzy Gillespie as a role model.

He recorded with Pepper Adams , Sonny Stitt , Bill Holman and Mel Lewis , Med Flory , Donahue and Jimmy Rowles and under his own name with his quartet ( Naptown Reunion , 1982). In 1992 he released Lee Katzman meets Supersax on LK Records (with Supersax on four titles, the rest mostly Katzman with his quartet, to which the pianist Jimmy Rowles belonged). He was on 71 recording sessions between 1947 and 1987 in Tom Lord's jazz discography .
