history
The beginnings
Cricket in Leicestershire was first mentioned in 1744 at Barrow upon Soar . In addition, some games of the then Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Club took place, which were mainly played against Nottingham and the Marylebone Cricket Club . The county club itself was founded in 1879, after the land for the current stadium on Grace Road was purchased in 1877. However, the team itself only received first-class status in 1895 .
First decades with first-class status
Leicestershire was mostly in the lower half of the table in the first half of the 20th century. The reason was, among other things, the county's small population from which most of the players were recruited. That only changed when Charles Palmer joined the team and in 1953 a third place was achieved for the first time. However, this performance could not stabilize and so they began to sign external players in the late 1950s. This policy bore fruit in 1965 when a third place was again achieved under Captain Tony Lock .
First golden years
The first title was won in one-day cricket when the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1972 could be won. This subsequently led to an upswing and good results. This was followed by winning the Sunday League in 1974 and in 1975 the County Championship was won for the first time . In the same year the team also won the Benson & Hedges Cup. With the second win of the Sunday League in 1977, the first golden phase came to an end. As a result, a second place in the County Championship in 1982 succeeded again , but in the 1980s winning the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1985 was the only win of a competition.
Second wave of success to this day
At the end of the 1990s, with the help of Jack Birkenshaw and James Whitaker, another wave of success was celebrated. The team won the County Championship in 1996 and 1998 . This went hand in hand with some finals in the one-day tournaments at that time. When Twenty20 was introduced as a competition in English cricket in 2003, the team turned out to be very successful. So the second edition of the competition was won in 2004 and won again in 2006. In county cricket, the back seat was mostly taken up again at this time. In 2003 the team was relegated to the second division and has not been able to return to the first division since then.
Stadion
The club's home ground is Grace Road in Leicester . In addition, Oakham School Ground in Oakham is still used occasionally today.
