Leighton Durham Reynolds

Leighton Durham Reynolds FBA (born February 11, 1930 in Abercanaid , Glamorgan , Wales , † December 4, 1999 in Oxford ) was a British classical scholar .

Life

Leighton Durham Reynolds grew up in Cardiff and Cambridge . He studied Classical Philology at the University of Cambridge , where the Latinist Roland Gregory Austin was his academic teacher. After his military service (1952-1954), during which he had learned Russian, he was as a junior research fellow at Queen's College of the University of Oxford made. There he worked with Roger AB Mynors , Richard William Hunt and Neil R. Ker , who sponsored his Seneca edition project . From 1957 to 1997 Reynolds worked as a Fellow and Tutor atBrasenose College , Oxford; a year before his retirement he received the title of professor. From 1975 to 1987 Reynolds served as editor of the journal Classical Review . In 1987 he was elected to the British Academy .

Reynolds was an eminent expert on Roman literature and its transmission in the Middle Ages. His editions of Seneca Letters (1965) and Dialogues (1977), Sallust's (1991) and Cicero's De finibus (1998) were each based on decades of study of the tradition. Reynolds also used his familiarity with the transmission of Roman literature to write manuals. The monograph Scribes and Scholars , which he edited together with Nigel Guy Wilson , had three editions and was translated into six foreign languages.
