Leipziger Kreis (museum directors)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leipziger Kreis is an association of the directors of important art museums in Germany. This group was named after its first conference location Leipzig .

background

At a meeting in January 2005 in the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts , 15 museum directors from art museums in Germany came together for the first time to form the Leipziger Kreis. Although the museums were already networked on a national level in the German Museum Association and also on an international level, the museum directors wanted to establish a small and informal discussion group. As the director of the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts, Hans-Werner Schmidt , explained in an interview, the Leipziger Kreis is not an institutional, but a personal establishment and for inclusion in this group there are neither the number of visitors, the budget, or the number of pictures in the respective museums is decisive.

Members

In 2008, the Leipzig Circle included the museum directors of the Hamburger Kunsthalle , the Kunsthalle Bremen , the State Museum Schwerin , the Sprengel Museum Hanover , the State Museums in Berlin , the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, the Chemnitz Art Collections , the Dresden State Art Collections , the museum landscape Hessen Kassel , the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg , the Museum Folkwang in Essen , the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne , the Städel , the Liebieghaus and the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Main , the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and of the State Gallery Stuttgart .

activities

The Leipziger Kreis received nationwide attention for the first time in 2006, when the association of museum directors issued a basic paper on the relationship between museums and foundations, donors and private collectors, patrons and sponsors. The approved ethical principles and guidelines for the activities of art museums have since served as the basis for a partnership with private donors.

On October 7, 2007, the participating museum directors organized the donation day in their museums . The aim was to honor the civic engagement and to provide incentives for future donors. Following on from this, the museum directors initiated Restoration Day on October 19, 2008 in order to present the work of the restorers to a wider public, and on July 4, 2010 a Research Day . Since then, the Leipziger Kreis has not appeared again.
