Lenz Klotz (born March 20, 1925 in Chur ; † April 19,  2017  in Basel ) was a Swiss painter, draftsman and printmaker. Initially active in the abstract , he later focused on the artistic element of the line.

Life

Lenz Kotz grew up in Masans near Chur and obtained his teaching diploma in 1945 at the Cantonal Teachers' College in Chur. In 1940 he came to Basel to fulfill his teaching post. The Basel Art Museum then had him organize Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner's graphic estate from 1945-50 . From 1951 to 1988 he was a specialist teacher at the Basel School of Applied Arts (now the University of Design and Art ). In addition to his art, which he practiced freely from 1952, Klotz also worked as an exhibition designer at the Völkerkundemuseum Basel .

In 1952 he married Susi Hafen. The marriage had three children.

Artistic creation

After geometrically abstract beginnings, Klotz switched to free gestural abstraction in the mid-1950s. This made him one of the Swiss tachists . After the free painting of the late 1950s and 1960s - with pictures in which, in part, bundles of lines fight each other in wild battles - a rigorous reduction process began in 1969. Klotz explored and examined the line intensively and banned color from his drawings. In his material pictures, lines are objectified by bamboo or rattan cane and stand out from the canvas as a relief or - in a further group of works - separate from it completely and stand independently as free sculptures or bronze casts. From 1978 onwards, color was used again.

In total, Klotz created around 1,500 works and over 1,000 drawings and was shown in numerous exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad. Among other things, he was honored on his 70th birthday in 1995 with a show at the Kunstmuseum and the Kunsthalle Basel . Like some museums, the former has included his works in its collection and displays them prominently. Lenz Klotz painted and organized his works until his death at the old age of 92.
