Leo K. Kuter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leo K. Kuter , often just Leo Kuter , (born February 21, 1897 in Shannon , Illinois , United States , † August 10, 1970 in Laguna Beach , California , ibid) was an American film architect .

Life

Born in Illinois, Kuter, based in Los Angeles since 1911 , came to film after completing his training in 1920 and initially found employment as a draftsman in the equipment department of the production company Famous Players-Lasky . Kuter also worked for other film studios until 1933, when he switched to Warner Bros. , where he stayed until he graduated from his career in 1965. At times, from 1948 to 1956, Kuter taught Scenic Design at the University of Los Angeles .

Kuter had designed his first decorations in the 1920s, but stayed away from active work as a film architect for the entire early sound film era (until 1943) and had to be content with one or the other assistant. His specialty since 1943 was initially propaganda-patriotic war films that sang the song of praise to the marines or bomber pilots of the Second World War or the Korean War . In addition, Kuter equipped some "Warner" classics such as John Huston's crime drama " Gangster in Key Largo " with Humphrey Bogart and Howard Hawks ' late-western Warner Bros. Entertainment " Rio Bravo " with John Wayne. Leo Kuter, "an experienced, not overly resourceful production designer," was also a co-founder in 1937 of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Art Directors , the professional organization of American film and television architects.
