Leo Sympher (born October 19, 1854 in Hannoversch Münden ; † January 16, 1922 in Berlin ) was a German civil engineer specializing in hydraulic engineering .

Life

Sympher joined the Navy in 1871, was appointed midshipman in 1872, but had to give up his naval career for health reasons. After additional preparations at the Realschule 1st class in Hanover, he studied engineering at the Technical University of Hanover from 1874 , where he became a member of the Corps Saxonia . After passing the two state examinations, he worked for several years at home and abroad. In 1883 he was employed in the technical office of the construction department of the Prussian Ministry of Public Works preparing the drafts for the planned waterway network. He was significantly involved in the construction of the Kiel Canal . He was therefore finally appointed to the Ministry of Public Works in 1899. Until the First World War, he played a decisive role in the construction of the Edertalsperre and the Mittelland Canal , the route of which he laid down.

Sympher was the founder of the Weserbund and until his death president of the Prussian Academy of Building .

Honors

In 1904 Sympher received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden (as Dr.-Ing. E. h. ). Within the facilities of the Minden waterway cross , a memorial in front of the information center commemorates him, which was erected in 1933 based on a design by Lütke.

Several streets are named after Sympher, including one in Minden near the Minden shaft lock , in Duisburg and in Dörverden . He is also the namesake of the Leo Sympher Vocational College in Minden. There is a Leo-Sympher-Promenade in Hanover . The former tour ship of the Berlin Waterways and Shipping Office also bears his name.
