Leobinus of Chartres
Saint Leobinus of Chartres , also Lubinus (French: Saint Lubin ), (* near Poitiers ; † March 14, 557 in Chartres ) is a saint of the Catholic Church who is venerated primarily in France . He was Bishop of Chartres from 544 until his death in 557 . His feast day is March 14th .
Legend
Saint Leobinus was born on a farm near Poitiers towards the end of the 5th century. One day he was tending his parents' cattle when he met a monk . He asked him to write down the letters of the alphabet so that he could teach himself to read. Since nothing else was available, the monk wrote the letters on the belt of the eager boy (see illustration, lower right medallion). For his further instruction, Leobinus came to a monastery near Poitiers, perhaps to the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Ligugé . After spending a few years as a hermit , the Bishop Atherius of Chartres appointed him abbot of the monastery of Brou . After the death of Aetherius in 544, the Frankish King Childebert I appointed Leobinus Bishop of Chartres. In 549 Leobinus took part in the fifth council of Orléans and three years later in the second council of Paris.
Relics and worship
Leobinus was buried in the church of Saint-Martin du Val near Chartres. The Paris churches of Saint-Séverin and Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis have relics of the saint. His head is kept in the Saint-Nicolas church in Blois . Miraculous healings and revivals from death are said to have taken place through St. Leobinus. Several parishes and village churches in northern France bear his name. He is the patron saint of Chartres , of Pithiviers in the Loiret department and of Rouvray-Catillon in the Seine-Maritime department .
