Christian Ernst Neeff (born August 23, 1782 in Frankfurt am Main ; † July 15, 1849 there ) was a doctor.

Life

The son from a family of craftsmen first studied theology at the University of Jena from 1800 , but soon turned to medicine, from 1804 in Marburg, then for half a year in Göttingen and in Würzburg. On September 24, 1808 he received his doctorate in Erlangen.

In 1809 he became a doctor in Frankfurt. On November 4, 1812, he was appointed professor of pathology by the Prince Primas at the foundation of the medical special school . In the autumn of 1813 he was a doctor at the military hospitals, from 1814 on he was appointed Physicus extraordinarius and in 1818 a Land Physicus .

In 1815 he also became a doctor at the Senckenberg Bürgerhospital , which also included supervision of the library, the collections of the Senckenberg Foundation and the botanical garden . Until 1831 he also gave lectures on botany. In 1817 he was one of the founders of the Senckenberg Natural Research Society (SNG) . Like other doctors, he was interested in electromedicine . On August 3, 1819 he was elected member (matriculation no. 1138) of the Leopoldina with the surname Euergetes II .

In 1824 Neeff was instrumental in founding the Physikalischer Verein . On November 24, 1824, he gave the association's opening speech, experimented in its physical museum and spoke at scientific conferences. Until 1843 he was chairman of the association several times.

In 1835 he presented his lightning wheel to the natural scientist meeting in Bonn . In 1836 he presented Johann Philipp Wagner's rotary machine at the annual celebration of the Senckenberg Society . In the same year he reported about falling stars . In 1845 he made investigations into the relationship between electrical polarity and light and heat . He published his research in the Journal für Chemie und Physik , later in the Annalen der Physik und Chemie .

In 1846 he resigned as a hospital doctor due to health issues.

Neeff had married in 1811, but his wife had already died in childbed in 1812.

Honors

The Christian Ernst Neeff Environment Prize of the Physikalischer Verein commemorates him for socially relevant work on the environment and technology. The asteroid (224831) Neeffisis (2006 WV129) is named after him.

Christian Ernst Neeff is buried in Frankfurt's main cemetery. His grave has been declared an honorary grave and is a listed building .
