Joseph Leodegar Canaval

Joseph Leodegar Canaval (born October 2, 1820 in Linz , † April 21, 1898 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian natural scientist , councilor of Klagenfurt and member of the Austrian House of Representatives .

Life

Josef Leodegar Canaval was the son of Josef Ignaz Canaval, who died in 1850 and was an expedition director of the city and state law in Linz. After visiting the elementary school and the high school in Linz, he studied law at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate for Dr. jur. He became a private teacher and lawyer conceived in Vienna. In 1848 he moved to Klagenfurt. In 1850 he became secretary of the Carinthian Industry and Commerce Association, and from 1851 to 1896 he was the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Klagenfurt. In addition, Canaval was curator at the Natural History Carinthian State Museum in Klagenfurt from 1850 to 1898 .

He was in charge of the mineralogical and geological-paleontological collections at the Carinthian State Museum. Together with his father-in-law Franz von Rosthorn , Canaval published the first state mineralogy of Carinthia. In 1863 he ensured the continued existence of the magazine Carinthia and from 1852 to 1897 he published 24 issues of the yearbook of the Historical State Museum . An obituary published in the journal of the Geologische Reichsanstalt emphasized his close collaboration with Ferdinand Seeland in the scientific exploration of Carinthia .

Canaval was married from 1854 to Ottilie von Rosthorn (1827-1917), with whom he had two sons and four daughters. The montanist Richard Canaval (1855–1939) came from the marriage .

November 4, 1873 to April 23, 1877: Member of the House of Representatives in the Reichsrat ( 5th legislative period ), Crown Land Carinthia, Curia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Klagenfurt region, he resigned because of business overload
