Leonardo is a planned biopic series of the European Alliance about Leonardo da Vinci . The Italian-French production is under the leadership of the Italian broadcaster Rai .
History of origin
In 2017, a cooperation between the public broadcasters ZDF , Rai and France Télévisions for the production of series was created with the European Alliance . In October 2018, Variety reported that the alliance was producing the Leonardo series, among other things . The eight-part biopic is about Leonardo da Vinci , who lived in Florence in the 16th century . The Italian broadcaster Rai is in charge of the project. Leonardo is created on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of da Vinci's death on the basis of a da Vinci biography by Walter Isaacson and is told from the perspective of the model Caterina.
The script was written by Frank Spotnitz and Steve Thompson . The title role was cast with Aidan Turner, as announced in October 2019. The following month, Freddie Highmore was announced as an additional cast member. He is supposed to represent the fictional police officer Stefano Giraldi. He is also executive producer of the series with his company Alfresco Pictures. He is producing the series together with the Italian production company Lux Vide and Spotnitz's Big Light Productions. Sony Pictures Television joined as a coproduct company at the end of 2019 . In the same year it was announced that further leading roles would be cast by Matilda De Angelis , who embodies the protagonist Caterina da Cremona, and Giancarlo Giannini as Andrea del Verrocchio and directed by Dan Percival . He previously worked with Spotnitz on the series The Man in the High Castle .
Filming began on December 2, 2019 and will take place in Rome .
