history

Before the occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkish armed forces, Leonarisso was mostly inhabited by Greek Cypriots . In the 1960 census, 707 Greek Cypriots were counted, in 1973 there were 617. About half of the residents fled during the invasion of the Turkish army. In October 1976 there were only 333 Cypriot Greeks, in 1980 there were only 30. UNFICYP still has a post in the village, but there are no more Cypriot Greeks living in Ziyamet.

After the occupation, Cypriot Turks and Turks from Turkey settled in the place. Most came from Adana , Bitlis , Muş , Osmaniye , Araklı ( Trabzon ) and Kağızman ( Kars ). In 2006 there were 715 Cypriot Turks, in 2011 there were 739.
