life and work

Nothing reliable is known about Leonhard Haag's youth. He grew up in Dillingen and there he must have completed his painting apprenticeship. During his apprenticeship years, however, he must have migrated to Paris, because a drawing from this period has been preserved in the Louvre . Haag settled in Tübingen in 1623, but not much is known about him from this period either. In 1627 he painted in Calw . In 1629 he improved princely portraits in the theological pen. In 1635 he died of the plague in the prime of his creative powers.

Despite the fixed motif, his only surviving drawing, which depicts Fortuna , is quite alive. In its swelling contours and soft fullness, it is probably no coincidence that it is reminiscent of Joseph Heintz , who in the first decade of the 17th century often stayed in Augsburg , which is close to Dillingen .

A son of Leonhard Haag named Martin Haag (* 1615 or shortly before) was a painter in Tübingen. He died a few weeks after his father, also of plague.
