career

The midfielder, who joined the amateurs of Fortuna Düsseldorf from BV 04 Düsseldorf in 1968, celebrated promotion to the Niederrhein association league with his comrades in 1970/71 . In addition, Helmreich was able to draw attention to himself in the games for the amateur country cup for the Lower Rhine . It was not until the final on July 11, 1971 in Bayreuth that Helmreich and his teammates Heiner Baltes , Benno Beiroth , Reiner Hollmann , Rudi Seliger and Klaus Wunder lost to Bayern - with Günter Helgert , Manfred Linz , Horst Pohl , Walter Sohnle - 1: 2 Renewal. Since he was able to confirm his performances in the Association League 1971/72, he was appointed by the then responsible DFB coach of the amateur national team, Jupp Derwall , at the beginning of 1972 to three international appearances in the "Olympic team". He made his debut with the DFB amateurs on January 12, 1972 in the game in Utrecht against Holland. This was followed by his second appearance in Jülich against France on March 15, before he had to end the “1972 Olympics” chapter in Munich with the international match against Denmark in Copenhagen on April 18. After the 1-0 win against Denmark at the side of the teammates Hermann Bitz , Bernd Nickel , captain Egon Schmitt , Roland Stegmayer and Klaus Wunder, the Fortuna amateur received no further appointments to the amateur national team.

At the end of the Bundesliga round 1971/72 , however, he was used three times by Fortuna coach Heinz Lucas in the three final days of the Bundesliga against Arminia Bielefeld, VfL Bochum and VfB Stuttgart. When Fortuna Düsseldorf was able to occupy third place in the Bundesliga with 42:26 points in the following season 1972/73 - now Gerd Zewe directed midfield - Helmreich had played in seven games. His last Bundesliga appearance was the top game on November 21, 1972 at Bayern Munich , which the second in the table from Düsseldorf lost 3-2.

In the next round he only played with the Fortuna amateurs. As captain of this team, he experienced in the 1976/77 round of the Niederrhein Association league the championship win before 1. FC Bocholt and thus the entry into the competition for the German amateur championship in 1977 . In the two final games against SV Sandhausen on June 22nd and 26th, the Fortuna amateurs prevailed 1-0 and 2-2 against the team from North Baden and brought the amateur championship to Düsseldorf.
