from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leonhard Mälzel (born March 27, 1783 in Regensburg , † August 1855 in Vienna ) was a pianist , inventor , mechanic and designer of mechanical musical instruments.

Live and act

Born as the son of the Regensburg organ builder and mechanic Johann Nepomuk Mälzel (1741–1797), Leonhard Mälzel enjoyed a good musical education. His brother was the famous mechanic Johann Nepomuk Mälzel . Like his brother, Leonhard Mälzel moved to Vienna and, like him, also invented machines. An instrument he called the “Orpheus Harmony” was demonstrated in Vienna in 1814. In 1821 or 1827 he was appointed Austrian Imperial and Royal Court Chamber Machinist.

On August 19, 1823, Leonhard Mälzel received a three-year patent for an improvement in orchestral works and in 1825 he built a metal harmonica with 53 French horns , trumpets , trombones and clarines and two timpani . The metal harmonica was therefore a relatively large automaton. Leonhard Mälzel traveled to St. Petersburg in 1825 with this invention of the metal harmonica . Another report about an appearance comes from the year 1828.
