Leonhard Rosen (also Leonard Röß ; * around 1532 in Willanzheim ; † October 6, 1591 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1563 to 1591 .

Life

Leonhard Rosen was born around 1532 in Willanzheim, Lower Franconia . The sources are silent about the parents of the future abbot, and Rosen's schooling is not mentioned. His entry into Ebrach Monastery is also not mentioned in the sources. It is therefore also unclear whether Leonhard Rosen held important positions within the monastery or was established early on as the successor to Paulus Zeller .

After the death of his predecessor on June 20, 1563, Leonhard was soon elected the thirty-fifth prelate of the abbey. His great spiritual gifts are extensively mentioned in the literature. As one of the first official acts, Abbot Leonhard had the destroyed monastery courtyard in Schweinfurt rebuilt. Furthermore, the process smoldered against the Hochstift Würzburg , which did not want to recognize the imperial immediacy of the monastery. That is why Abbot Leonhard often stayed in the safe courtyards in Herrnsdorf, Bamberg and Nuremberg .

When Leonhard stayed in the befriended Bronnbach monastery in 1573 , Abbot General Nicolas I. Boucherat appointed him father abbot of all Franconian Cistercian monasteries, and he was also a visitor to the monasteries of both sexes. Again, Rosen sought a trial against Würzburg at the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Speyer, which, however, was declared over after ten years without a decision. Because of the many accidents, Rosen wanted to give up temporarily, instead the convent provided him with an abbot adjutor, Hieronymus Hölein, at his side.

In 1585 there was a great misfortune in the monastery: The monks ' dormitory and the monastery library burned and were completely destroyed a second time after the Peasants' War of 1525. Rosen pushed for the reconstruction of the building and had the complex rebuilt by 1588. He also set up a singing school for boys in the monastery. Abbot Leonhard Rosen died on October 6, 1591.

coat of arms

A personal coat of arms is proven for Abbot Leonhard Rosen . It can be found on his epitaph in the Ebrach monastery church. Description : In silver on green ground, a rose bush with two red flowers growing out of the ground. While the coat of arms was used on the epitaph, only the coat of arms of the Cistercians with the letters L and A (for Leonhard Abbas) can be seen on the former judges' house in Burgwindheim.
