The epitaph of Hieronymus I. Hölein in the monastery church

Hieronymus I. Hölein (also Hieronymus I. Holein ; * in Großlangheim ; † November 25, 1615 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1591 to 1615 .

Life

Hieronymus I. Hölein was born in Großlangheim, Lower Franconia , probably in the second half of the 16th century . Nothing is known about the parents of the future abbot, nor is Jerome's schooling mentioned in the sources. What is certain is that he studied philosophy at the Jesuit University in Ingolstadt and was closely associated with the Upper Franconian Langheim Abbey .

When Leonhard Rosen , the predecessor of Hieronymus, died in 1591, Hieronymus Hölein was elected by the monks as his successor. Previously, Hölein had been elected Abbot Adjutor on March 10, 1591. After the benediction of the new abbot, which probably took place in 1591, the prelate had silver coins minted. They were distributed to friends of the abbot. Among them was the future prince-bishop of Würzburg and Bamberg, Johann Gottfried I von Aschhausen .

First, however, Abbot Hieronymus had to deal with his predecessor Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn von Würzburg. The Hochstift Würzburg did not recognize the required imperial immediacy of the monastery and litigated it. Hieronymus I. Hölein tried to settle this dispute through a compromise. In 1594, two recesses were passed to serve as guidelines for later controversy.

After the dispute was settled, the Ebrach monastery was able to start new construction activities. Abbot Jerome began to equip the convent church, so new altars and paintings were purchased. There was also construction going on in the monastery villages. The blood chapel in Burgwindheim was built, as was the Rochus chapel near Ebrach. The so-called Mauritius Chapel was built in Bergheide near Weyer. In Rödelsee the abbot probably built a new monastery courtyard .

In 1605 Hieronymus I Hölein was appointed Vicar General for Franconia by the Abbot General of the Cistercians . In this function he was allowed to consecrate all abbots in the region. The benediction of Michael from the Lower Bavarian monastery of Aldersbach has come down to us for 1612 . On November 25, 1615 around 7 p.m., the thirty-sixth abbot of the Ebrach monastery died. He was buried in the monastery church. His successor Johannes V. Dressel had an epitaph made by Nikolaus Lenkhart, to whom the tomb of Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn in the Würzburg Cathedral is ascribed.

coat of arms

The personal coat of arms of Hieronymus I. Hölein can be found on the epitaph of the prelate in the monastery church in Ebrach. Description : Three ears of wheat standing on a mountain of three. The tinging is unclear, the ears of wheat on the epitaph were framed in gold, while the background was probably blue.
