Leopold George

Leopold George (born August 14, 1811 in Berlin ; † May 24, 1873 ibid) was a German philosopher and theologian.

Life

Johann Friedrich Leopold George was a son of the Berlin painter and copper engraver Johann Gottlieb George and his wife Friederike, daughter of the master tailor Johann Gottlieb Bartz in Gollnow / Pomerania.

He studied theology with Friedrich Schleiermacher and August Neander . He received his doctorate in 1833 and completed his habilitation in 1834. In 1836 he became a high school teacher, but was also teaching at the university. From 1856 to 1859 he was an associate professor in Berlin, then a full professor at the University of Greifswald . In 1868, George was elected rector of the university.
