Leopold Hoys (born November 13, 1713 in Vienna , † March 12, 1797 in Bamberg ; also: Leopold Hoyss ) was a large-scale and art watchmaker.

Life

Leopold Hoys was the son of a body coachman to Emperor Charles VI. born. He finished his apprenticeship as a watchmaker with Christoph Prunner in Klagenfurt in 1732 after six years with all the praise of the master. In 1739 he received his journeyman's certificate and two years later he was admitted to the masterpiece . He came to Bamberg in 1742, where he was elected head of the guild of large and small watchmakers in 1745. In 1757 he became the prince-bishop's court and cathedral chapter clockmaker and moved into his official apartment in the clock judge's house at 6 Hinterer Bach Street.

For the city of Bamberg he created the clock on the town hall, which he equipped with a quarter of an hour strike, which was not yet known.

Hoys was married twice. The only child, a daughter, emerged from the first marriage. He died in Bamberg on March 12, 1797 and was buried in the cemetery of the Upper Parish . His grave monument on the north side is not at the place of his burial.

His fame is based on his support clocks , which are sometimes also equipped with a calendar mechanism. The characteristic housings are unmistakable. The development of a double pendulum goes back to him, which he often built into his clocks. He signed the clocks with Hoys, Bamberg . After his daughter married the journeyman Georg Schmitt (* 1754 in Oberschwarzach , † 1830 in Bamberg), the clocks were labeled Hoys et Schmitt from 1786 onwards . More than a hundred clocks come from his workshop .

Tomb

The tomb for Leopold Hoys, created by an unknown master but attributed to the sculptor Johann Bernhard Kamm , has been preserved on the north side of the Upper Parish in Bamberg. The tomb with a height of 138 cm and a width of 93 cm consists of a plate with the following inscription:

HERE RUES / THE ASHES OF WEIL: / BBERG: / HOF: U: DOMKAPITL: / UHRMACHERS / LEOPOLD HOYS / THE 13TH NOV. 1713 IN VIENNA / BORED / THE 12TH MARCH 1797 IN BAMBERG / DEATH / PLACE THIS MONUMENT / YOUR BELOVED FATHER / HIS GRATEFUL CHILDREN "

A globe sits on the column with the inscription plate. At the “equator”, this ball has Roman numerals in the order of a sundial, a snake winds up. At the side is the figure of Prudentia with a mirror and winged head, at her feet a triangle. Under the cornice, on which the figure and column stand, is a winged skull in the middle; Two crossed joint bones are arranged beneath a draped cloth.

The tomb was last renovated in 1993 with the support of Bamberg watchmakers. The remains of the previous gold and white painting disappeared.

progeny

The daughter, born in 1743, married the watchmaker Schmitt from Oberschwarzach, who took over the business of her father-in-law. His descendants were able to continue the business into the 20th century.
