Leopold of Vienna
Leopold von Wien (* around 1340 ; † after 1385 probably in Vienna ) was an Austrian scholar and historian of the 14th century.
From 1368 Leopold was a member of the Augustinian Hermits in Vienna. He studied and taught at the theological faculty of the University of Vienna , established in 1384, and from 1385 he was honorary chaplain of the Pope . The family name Stainreuter , which was previously assigned to him , is generally rejected today.
He is considered to be the author of the Austrian Chronicle of the 95 Dominions , which were probably commissioned by the Austrian Duke Albrecht III. Was written at the end of the 14th century. This is an extensive history of (alleged) Austrian rulers since Noach , which should determine the history of the 15th century. The author or the client was less concerned with an exact representation of historical facts than with depicting an alleged descent of the Duchy of Austria and its rulers from Old Testament Judaism in order to enhance their own importance.
The importance of the work is underlined by the fact that around 50 manuscripts of it are known to date. It was illustrated with pictures of coats of arms from the "ancestral line" of the Habsburgs as well as with pictures of biblical and Austrian history. On behalf of Emperor Friedrich III. Motifs from the chronicle were implemented on the coat of arms of the Georgskirche in Wiener Neustadt .
