Darrell Russell (born May 27, 1976 in Pensacola , Florida , † December 15, 2005 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American football player . He played as a defensive lineman and took part in two pro bowls .

Russel grew up in San Diego , California and graduated from St. Augustine High School . He then attended the University of Southern California (USC) and was signed into the 1997 Drafts by the Oakland Raiders .

After participating in the Pro Bowl , the NFL's all-star game , in 1998 and 1999 , he was suspended for four games in 2001 for failing to adhere to the NFL's drug guidelines . Shortly thereafter, another banned substance was found on him and he was banned for a year. In 2003 he played eight games for the Washington Redskins , his last NFL appearance being at a Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp . Another positive drug test in 2004 was his seventh violation, after which he was banned for life.

On December 15, 2005, Russell was co- driving with USC teammate Michael Bastianelli when the car spun out of control and hit several obstacles. Both men were found unconscious at the scene of the accident and transported to the hospital, where only death could be determined for both of them.
