Lepismium monacanthum is a species of the genus Lepismium in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet monacanthum means 'with a sting'
description
Lepismium monacanthum grows epiphytically and shrubby with richly branched, initially upright, later drooping shoots . The flattened to triangular shoot segments are up to 45 centimeters long and 2 to 3 centimeters wide. Their edges are sawn. The yellowish woolen areoles have one or two strong, piercing, black thorns 6 to 10 millimeters in length.
The orange flowers appear laterally near the shoot tips. They are up to 1.5 inches long. Your pericarpel is bald. The spherical fruits are orange to light pink in color.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Lepismium monacanthum is distributed in southeastern Bolivia in the departments of Cochabamba , Chuquisaca , Santa Cruz and Tarija and in northwestern Argentina in the provinces of Jujuy and Salta at altitudes of 300 to 2000 meters.
The first description as Rhipsalis monacantha was in 1879 by August Grisebach . Wilhelm Barthlott placed the species in 1987 in the genus Lepismium . Nomenclatory synonyms are Acanthorhipsalis monacantha (Griseb.) Britton & Rose (1923) and Pfeiffera monacantha (Griseb.) PVHeath (1994).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
