Les Thugs is an indie rock band from France . Sub Pop Records signed the band, influenced by melodic hardcore punk , in 1993.

history

The two brothers Eric and Christophe Sourice have played in various bands such as IVG , Dazibao and Stress Punk with French lyrics since 1979 . In 1983 they founded the band Les Thugs in Angers together with the former stress singer Philippe Brix, Gerald Chabaud and Thierry Meanard . The band name refers to the historical brotherhood of the Thuggee , a following of the goddess Kali and not directly to the associated English loan word thug (dt. Bat, rowdy).

The band records several mini LPs and EPs that are released through various independent labels in France. As of EP Electric Trouble , the English label Vinyl Solution is an international distributor. The recordings for this EP took place in London's Redwood Studio. During a tour through Sardinia , Chabaud leaves the band surprisingly, another Sourice brother joins. Pierre-Yves Sourice made his debut in Grenoble in June 1988 . In 1988 the Maxi Dirty White Race was also released .

In 1989 Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman, the founders of Sub Pop, were at the Berlin Independence Days Festival with Mudhoney . Poneman describes the line-up of the festival as "caustic", for fun he wanted to see a French band, but they convinced him ("blew my shit away"). In 1992 they are on a tribute album for the Dead Kennedys on the occasion of the hundredth release of Alternative Tentacles .

Initially a contract was signed for a single , but the collaboration continues to this day. With the exception of the album IABF , all albums in America were published by Sub Pop. IABF appeared on Alternative Tentacles.

style

The band's style of music is often described as "psychedelic" hardcore . Peculiar is v. a. the decidedly melancholy list that runs through its driving punk rock music on several records. The band itself describes their style as rock 'n' roll , influenced by Johnny Kidd to Sex Pistols or Buzzcocks . Parallels can be drawn with The Saints and The Replacements . The band has both French and English lyrics.
