Level 42 were known and loved in the jazz rock and funk scene, bassist Mark King, nicknamed Mr. Thumb , was counted among the best bassists in the world in the mid-1980s. But the band was not commercially successful and decided to make music that was more suitable for the masses and more straightforward. For this purpose the musicians collaborated with their friend Wally Badarou and wrote the piece Lessons in Love with him . The song combines contemporary pop music with funk, based on a “galloping slap bass line ” paired with “jagged keyboard blowers”.
Lessons in Love was released worldwide on April 14, 1986. The title was the band's only number one hit in Germany , Switzerland and Denmark . In Germany it was number 1 for 6 weeks and number 2 for another 6 weeks. The song is 4:00 minutes long and appeared on the album Running in the Family . On the B-side is the song Hot Water (Live) . The music video was shot in early 1986 by Stuart Orme; In the storyline, the band plays the song on a construction site .
