Let the River Run is a song by Carly Simon . It was published in 1988 as the theme song of the movie Working Girl .

background

Carly Simon with Oscar (1989)

The lyrics of the song were inspired not only by the script of the film, but also by poems by Walt Whitman . Musically, Carly Simon used opposites: on the one hand, a modern hymn to New York in typical pop clothing, on the other hand, she placed a contemporary jungle rhythm under the composition. There are two allusions in the text that suggest a political or religious context, on the one hand "Silver Cities Rise" and on the other hand "The New Jerusalem", but neither was intended.

In addition to the version by Carly Simon, the film itself also features a choral version of the St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys from New York City .

The song received all three major film awards in the United States: the Oscar for best song , the Golden Globe for best film song (along with Two Hearts by Phil Collins from the film Buster ) and a Grammy for “Best Song Written Specifically for Film or Television ". This made this song the first to be written by a single artist and to receive these three major awards. This was later followed by Bruce Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia . Songs that also won all three prizes but were written by more than one person were Evergreen ( Barbra Streisand with lyricist Paul Williams), Into the West ( Annie Lennox with two co-composers Fran Walsh and Howard Shore ) and Skyfall ( Adele in collaboration with Paul Epworth )

The American Film Institute put the song at number 91 in the "100 Songs - America's Best Movie Songs".

single

The song was released as a single in multiple versions by Arista Records . The song peaked at number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the charts for 10 weeks, as well as reaching number 11 on the adult contemporary charts.
