Leuchars ( ) is a village in the Scottish council area of Fife . It is located about seven kilometers northwest of St Andrews and ten kilometers south of Dundee on Mortray Water . A few hundred meters south is the Eden estuary .
history
A baronate Leuchar already existed in the time of Wilhelm the Lion . The St Athernase Church , which is still in use today, was built as Ecclesia de Lochres in the 1180s and was under the St Andrews Priory . Before 1264, a castle was built on the site with Leuchars Castle . The mansion Earlshall Castle dates back to the 1540s. The village only developed significantly with the drainage of the land in the 18th century. Towards the end of the First World War in 1917, a naval base was established near Leuchars. Three years later, the Royal Air Force followed with the construction of the RAF Leuchars airfield . The Royal Air Force left the base in 2015 and handed it over to the British Army .
traffic
The A919 ( Guardbridge - St Michaels ) runs through Leuchars and connects the village to the A91 in the south and the A92 in the north . In 1848 Leuchars received its own station on the North British Railway .
