The Leven is a river in the Scottish Council Areas of Perth and Kinross and Fife . It is the only outflow from Loch Leven .
Loch Leven in Perth and Kinross is the largest freshwater lake in the Scottish Lowlands . The Leven flows from the south-east bank of the lake in a north-easterly direction. After about nine kilometers the Leven reaches Glenrothes . There the A92 crosses it and the Leven continues to flow in an easterly direction through Milton of Balgonie , past the Cameronbridge whiskey distillery , through Windygates , to finally flow into the Firth of Forth after a total of 26 km in Leven .
Between 1828 and 1832, the first five kilometers of the river course were straightened in order to gain usable land and to regulate the flow rate. Due to its high gradient, the Leven was used to generate water power in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 1820s, in addition to textile manufacturing companies, there were around 40 mills along the Leven. Before the water wheels were installed, the Leven was good for trout fishing. One of the most important tributaries is the Ore , which flows into the Leven halfway between Glenrothes and the estuary.
