Windygates is a village in the Scottish Council Area Fife north of the River Leven . It is six kilometers east of Glenrothes and 25 kilometers north-northeast of Edinburgh . In 2001 the population was 1,645. Windygates was once a major waypoint on the route between North Fife and the ferry across the Firth of Forth . Today the A916 coming from Cupar runs through the village. The A915 ( St Andrews - Kirkcaldy ) passes directly to the south and the A911 coming from Milnathort ends .

With the Cameronbridge distillery, which has been active since 1824 , the international Diageo group operates one of the largest whiskey distilleries in Scotland in Windygates .
