Levente
Levente is a Hungarian masculine first name .
Origin and meaning
The name Levente appears twice in the Arpáden family tree. For the first time Levente is mentioned as the eldest son of Árpád, the founder of the Árpád dynasty . Levente was a military leader and died before 907. For the second time Levente († 1046) is mentioned as the eldest son of Vazul , a prince from the Hungarian Arpad dynasty.
The name, which means something like "hero, bold warrior, knight", is derived from the Serbo-Croatian leventa (Turkish sailor, hero, handsome fighter). The word originally comes from Persian: levend (free, voluntary soldier) and is only used as a first name in Hungarian.
The short form Levi is not related to the Jewish first name Levi , often also written Levy . Various slang versions such as Lecsó are also popular among Hungarian youth. The name day is celebrated on June 18 and 28, respectively.
The Leventes (Leventék) were a state youth organization in Hungary under Reichsverweser Horthy, similar to the Hitler Youth .
