biography

Lev Samuilowitsch Klein was born on July 1, 1927 to a Jewish family in Vitebsk. His family was atheist and strictly Russified. Both grandfathers were entrepreneurs before the revolution, one was the company owner, the other a merchant of the first guild.

The father, Stanislaw Semjonowitsch (with Samuil Simchowitsch ID card) Klein was born in Warsaw, during the civil war he was a medical officer in Denikin's volunteer army , at the end of the civil war (from 1920) in the Red Army . He was never in the party. The mother, Assja Mojseewna, was a renowned surgeon. Lew Klein attended a Belarusian middle school and a music school.

When Lev's parents were both called to the front as army doctors in 1941, the rest of the family (young Lev together with his grandparents and younger brother Boris) were evacuated to Wolokolamsk , from there to Yegoryevsk and then to Yoshkar-Ola . Klein initially worked in the kolkhoz , then finished the ninth grade of middle school and went to the front as a civilian worker at the age of 16. In 1944 he served on the 3rd Belorussian Front in military construction units and moved with the unit from Smolensk to the German border. Then Klein studied for a year in a railway technical center.

After the war the family lived in Grodno , where his father worked as a director of a hospital and his mother worked as a surgeon in another hospital and as the head of the city's rapid medical aid. Klein passed his secondary school leaving certificate exams and attended the Faculty of Language and Literature of the Pedagogical Institute of Grodno.

After a year of study at the Grodno Pedagogical Institute, Klein enrolled at the Leningrad University as a distance learning student in 1946 and moved there a year later. During the first years he studied at the same time at the philological faculty (Russian philology with Vladimir Jakowlewitsch Propp ) and the historical faculty (at the chair of archeology under the direction of MI Artamonow) and completed his training at the historical faculty in 1951 with a diploma and distinction.

For a year and a half he worked as a bibliographer at the library of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad. For the next few years he worked as a teacher in secondary schools in Leningrad, then in Volosowo , then in Grodno. In 1957 he began an apprenticeship at the Leningrad University of Archeology, which he graduated in 1960. He then gave lectures at the same institute and was accepted as the institute's assistant in 1962. In 1968 he received his doctorate with the dissertation The Origin of the Donetsk Catacomb Culture and worked as a lecturer from 1976. The first scientific work appeared in 1955, the first monograph in 1978. He took part in a number of archaeological expeditions into the forests of Russia and Belarus, but mainly in the steppe of Ukraine and the Don Basin, the last five as the leader. There have been excavations in old Russian cities, hills of the Bronze Age and the Scytho-Sarmatian times.
