Career

Lewis Dewart attended public schools in his home country and then worked as a clerk in his father's shop. He later went into the coal and banking industries. Between 1806 and 1816 he was a postman in Sunbury. At the same time he embarked on a political career. From 1812 to 1820 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; between 1823 and 1826 he was a member of the State Senate . Dewart was also one of the founders of the Danville & Pottsville Railroad and became one of the first directors of that railway company. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future US President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 .

In the 1830 congressional election , Dewart was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Alem Marr on March 4, 1831 . Until March 3, 1833 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.

Between 1835 and 1840 Dewart was again a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. In 1840 he served as its president. In 1837 he was also Mayor of Sunbury. There he was also a member of the school committee. In 1840 he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the upcoming gubernatorial election . He died in Sunbury on April 26, 1852.
