Lewis Solon Rosenstiel

Lewis Solon Rosenstiel (* 1891 in Cincinnati ; † 1975 ) was an American mobster of the " Kosher Nostra " and spirits producer.

Life

Rosenstiel was the nephew of an owner of a medicinal alcohol distillery . Before Prohibition ended in 1933, Rosenstiel owned an extensive store of medicinal alcohol in Schenley , Pennsylvania . This warehouse was the share capital of Schenley Industries .

During the Second World War, bought Rosenstiel the Brewery Blatz Brewing Co. , got into the trade in wine , vermouth (Cresta Blanca, Roma and La Bohème) , rum (Carioca) , liquor (DuBouchett) , Brandy (Coronet, J. Bavet and Jean Robert) and gin (Silver Wedding, Schenley and Gibson) and had penicillin and other antibiotics manufactured.

In 1945, Schenley Industries was the market leader for spirits in the United States and made an annual profit of 49 million US dollars.

In 1947 Schenley Industries founded the subsidiary Universal Service Corporation , which was led by the Olympic official John Valentine Grombach. In the 1950s, Rosenstiel owned a house on East 80th Street in Manhattan , a 2,000-acre estate in Connecticut, and a yacht in Florida. In 1952, Schenley Industries was worth $ 438 million

On December 1, 1960, Rosenstiel discussed issues of untaxed alcohol consumption with United States Treasury Secretary Robert B. Anderson . The US judiciary met at Lewis Solon Rosenstiel's birthday celebrations.

Rosenstiel was an intimate friend of the director of the FBI , J. Edgar Hoover . Hoover placed bets with Meyer Lansky bookmakers , and Rosenstiel paid the stake. If Hoover won, their joint lawyer Roy Cohn brought him the win. In 1975 Roy Cohn pressed a pen into the hand of the comatose rose stalk, with which he signed his will.

As a philanthropist , he donated the Rosenstiel Award .
