The Free Republic of Liberland ( Czech Svobodná Republika Liberland , English Free Republic of Liberland ) is an internationally unrecognized pseudo-state that is said to be located on an uninhabited piece of land on the Danube . The area is administered by Croatia , but designated as Serbian territory. Serbia stated that the area does not belong to Serbia. The declared “state purpose” is the creation of a tax haven .

As a national territory, Liberland claims the green area that is designated as Siga . Due to the border disputes, the yellow areas are claimed by Croatia and Serbia - the green part is under Croatian control, but is designated as Serbian territory by Croatia, which Serbia rejects.

history

Proclamation and claimed national territory

Liberland was proclaimed on April 13, 2015 by Vít Jedlička , a leading member of the small libertarian Czech party of free citizens . In a vote carried out on April 20, 2015, Jedlička is said to have been elected President of Liberland with the three votes cast in his favor by the “founders of the state”.

According to Jedlička, neither Serbia nor Croatia are interested in the approximately seven square kilometers of land in the context of their territorial disputes, which is why it was no man's land . Jedlička named the "increasing influence of interest groups on the functioning of states and the associated poorer living conditions for the people" as the reason for the establishment of the state . States such as Monaco or Liechtenstein would have served as inspiration .

The deserted area of Gornja Siga lies between an old tributary and the main arm of the Danube . It consists of forests, meadows and swamps that are often inundated by floods. It is hardly accessible from a traffic point of view, the only existing building is a hunting lodge that was abandoned decades ago and has since fallen into disrepair.

Further happening

At the end of April 2015 the "settlement" of the area should begin. First, Jedlička wanted to build roads and port facilities. On May 10, 2015, Jedlička was temporarily arrested by Croatian officials when he tried to enter his "national territory" despite being banned. Dozens of other people were also prevented from "entering". Kolja Spori is currently the representative of Liberland in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Constitution and flag

Flag of Liberland

Liberland's motto is live and let live . According to libertarian or minarchist ideas, the constitution of Liberland should protect the personal and economic freedom of its citizens. In Liberland no taxes should be levied. In addition, according to the Austrian School, there will be no central bank, instead a currency competition should be used and crypto currencies should be used.

The flag of Liberland consists of a horizontally central black bar on a yellow background. In the center of the flag is the coat of arms of Liberland. As with the black and yellow flag used by anarcho capitalists , the yellow part represents the free market , the black part represents rebellion. As a symbol of freedom, the coat of arms contains a bird, a tree that represents wealth and abundance, and a river that represents the Danube.

"Citizens" via website

Proof of Citizenship from Liberland

It is possible to apply for citizenship of the microstate via the official website of Liberland . The only condition would be that the applicant be "neither a communist nor a Nazi nor any other extremist ". After just two days, 18,729 applications were received from 184 countries. Jedlička expected up to 100,000 inquiries within two weeks. Nevertheless, the naturalization process should be selective and initially only 3,000 to 5,000 people should be admitted. After two weeks, over 300,000 people worldwide had registered. Citizenship is said to cost US $ 10,000 in Bitcoin .
