Libode is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is the seat of the Nyandeni municipality in the OR Tambo district .

In 2011 Libode had 4560 inhabitants (2011 census). IsiXhosa is most commonly spoken. The city is located southeast of Lesotho in Pondoland .
history
The area around today's city of Libode was annexed by the Transkei authorities in 1935 . Libode was founded as a central location in the same year and subsequently expanded into a town. In 1940, the Ursulines of St. Ursula Monastery in Brig, Switzerland, opened the Mount Nicholas Mission branch , which still exists today. Among other things, they run a secondary school with a boarding school there .
Economy and Infrastructure
The area around Libode has unemployment rates between 65 and 87% and poverty rates between 65 and 90%. The infrastructure is one of the worst in South Africa (all data as of 2007). There is a KSD College for vocational training in technical areas and the St. Barnabas Hospital .
Libode is on the R61 highway , which connects the place with Mthatha and Port St. Johns , among others .
